'Why is my curriculum white?' is a nationwide campaign run by NUS which we will be launching in lancaster this April. The aims of this movement are to decolonise our curriculum, thus creating a curriculum that is truely 'post-colonial.' This involves shifting the paradigm/model of eurocentric, colonial 'white-washing' of education to one that works outside of a western imperative gaze. So far we have been in conversation with various departments across campus, many lecturers from which have been very supportive and we are pleased to say that LUSU will be fully supporting this campaign, which will be historic in it being the first time that they have actively been involved with curriculum content on campus! We will be having a variety of guests at our event, which will commence with a few speakers followed by a panel event in which to discuss the question of 'why is my curriculum white?' and how we can work together to effect a change! :
- Anthony Anaxagorou (Poet and Writer - has worked with Akala whom we have had in the past!) - Dr Kehinde Andrews (Associate Professor in Sociology, Birmingham City University) - Charlene Frost (Blackout LDN) - Dr Angelica Pesarini (Lecturer in the Sociology of race, gender and sexuality. In the center for gender and womens studies - Lancaster Univeristy) - Imogen Tyler (Professor of Sociology - Lancaster University) A few questions to get you thinking: - Why are certain voices written out of our curriculum, across the board, whilst others are favoured? - What are the wider implications of this? - How important is it to get a honest, unbiased education of the British Empire in relation to the cultivation of social policies and our understanding of relations between ethnic minorities and majorities in the UK? - Why does British education make the world own up their atrocious past, such as Nazi Germany, but fails to look reflexively at its own? We would love to have you come to our event, it will be an open space for people to discuss their support and/or issues with the campaign. We dont want anyone at all to feel discouraged from coming, all races/ethnicities, genders, and viewpoints are welcome! Thank you, and hope to see you there!
